Perth is on the Swan River, named for the native black swans by Willem de Vlamingh, captain of a Dutch expedition and namer of WA's Rottnest Island,
The city centre and most of the suburbs are on the sandy and relatively flat Swan Coastal Plain, which lies between the Darling Scarp and the Indian Ocean. The soils of this area are quite infertile.
It is one of two civilian airports within the Perth metropolitan area, the other being Jandakot Airport. Besides the civilian airports, there are also two military airports within the Perth metropolitan area.
The larger of the two is RAAF Base Pearce, 30 km (18.6 mi) to the north of Perth Airport, at Bullsbrook. The other is 42 km (26.1 mi) south west of Perth Airport, and is a part of the military base of HMAS Stirling on Garden Island
